Thyroid Cancer & Young Adults

Continuing our discussion from last week on Head and Neck cancers, this weekend in The Group Room we're focusing on thyroid cancer.  The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck and is responsible for producing hormones that regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight.  There are about 37,000 new cases of thyroid cancer each year in the US, and females are more likely to have thyroid cancer at a ratio of three to one.  Studies have reported an increasing incidence of thyroid cancer, and in particular, in young adults, as it is now the second most common kind of cancer in this age group. The majority of thyroid cancers are highly treatable and survivors often feel a certain stigma about this and are even made to feel like their cancer type doesn't matter so much.  However, thyroid cancer can also present serious challenges, spreading to distant sites.

Everything Changes
The Insider's Guide to Cancer in Your 20s and 30s
by Kairol Rosenthal

Everything ChangesOn a shoe-string budget and with tape recorder in hand, Kairol Rosenthal emerged from treatment and hit the road in search of other twenty- and thirty-something cancer survivors. From the Big Apple to the Bible Belt, she dusts the sugar coating off of the young adult cancer experience, exposing the gritty and compelling stories of twenty-five complete strangers.

The men and women in Everything Changes confess their most vulnerable moments, revealing cancer experiences they never told anyone else - what they thought about at night before going to bed, what they wish they could tell their lovers but were too afraid to. With irreverent flare and practical wisdom, Everything Changes includes stories, how-to resources, and expert advice on must-know issues.

Everything Changes is available at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Borders, and wherever books are sold.
